Zoo keeper’s primetime farewell

Zoo keeper’s primetime farewell

With a global pandemic taking precedent over the past 18 months, it’s been difficult for our PR team to enjoy the fruits of their labour, so when Blackpool Zoo got in touch to share the news that one of their much-loved keepers was retiring after 48 years (!!) it was all systems go!

To set the scene, Peter had been a zoo keeper at the Fylde Coast attraction since he was 17 years old, nothing more, nothing less – kindly declining promotions over the years to simply focus on the job he loved the most, working closely with the zoo’s most cherished animals. His favourite? The Camels!

Although bittersweet that Peter was leaving, it was the perfect time for our PR team to showcase the zoo and the fabulous work Peter carries out, at a time when doors were opening back up to the public.

To share the huge milestone and news to the world, ICG’s PR gurus worked their magic sending a press release out to the nation’s press receiving, local coverage on North West Tonight and BBC Radio Lancashire and national coverage on (drum roll please)… BBC’s The One Show!

Our team were there every step of the way organising the primetime show’s visit  to the zoo.

The results? A five minute segment with Strictly champion, Bill Bailey, spending a day with Peter working with the animals behind the scenes.

For the cherry on top of the cake, ICG helped to organise an engraved plaque so there will always be a little bit of Peter at the zoo.

It really was a whirlwind week of press and a thoroughly deserved send off for Peter.
