To mark National Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating ICG’s first apprentice, Lucy Wignall.

Lucy joined ICG as a Digital Marketing Apprentice and supports the Digital Marketing team across our diverse range of clients, alongside completing her course.

Let’s hand this blog over to Lucy to hear about her first three months at ICG…

“Hi, I’m Lucy. I’m ICG’s first apprentice and I’m about to share with you how my first few months have gone.

First week
I started college in September 2021 but I soon realised getting into digital marketing through university wasn’t the right path for me, so I decided to start my career via a different route and apply for an apprenticeship at ICG.

ICG appealed to me due to being able to carry on in an education setting, but the majority of my time would be spent on practical and real-life projects, across various clients, building up my experience at the same time.

The first week was strange getting used to an office environment but everyone made me feel really welcome and I soon settled into the digital marketing team. I joined the digital marketing department of five people, and it’s now expanded to seven of us.

First month
Learning on-the-job with, instead of being taught how to tackle projects has been really helpful for me. I can combine the skills I'm learning every day with the practical study elements of my course.

One of the first big projects I was involved in was a Christmas influencer event for one of ICG’s retail clients. I was tasked with blogger outreach pre-event, managing daily communication with bloggers, and then supporting the team at the event - it was great to work on a client project from start to finish.

Past 3 months
I have recently completed my first module of training towards achieving my Digital Marketing Level 3 Apprenticeship qualification.

I’ve really enjoyed being in an office environment and I’m now starting to work across ICG’s design, PR and account management teams to get a better understanding of what projects people are working on and how digital marketing forms part of their bigger campaign planning.

Looking ahead
Over the next few months I'll be building on my social media knowledge getting involved with paid advertising, helping with digital PR link building tasks and working on my Google Analytics qualification - as well as completing coursework and my training courses.”

We’ll be sharing more of Lucy’s journey as her apprenticeship progresses, look out for more updates on our blog throughout the year.
